How Does the Triconex 3625A Digital Output Module Strengthen Critical Process Safety?
August 26, 2026
What Is the Triconex 3625A Digital Output Module and How Does It Work?
The Triconex 3625A is a 32-point, Triple Modular Redundant digital output module. It supports supervised or non-supervised output operation and has a nominal field voltage of 24 VDC.

Triple Modular Redundant architecture uses three independent control channels. Each channel processes output information, and the module’s voting circuitry determines the final output state. This architecture is designed to prevent a single channel fault from immediately disrupting the required control action.

The module transfers commands generated by the Tricon application program to connected field devices. Depending on the system configuration and process safety philosophy, these outputs may be used for either energize-to-trip or de-energize-to-trip applications.

The 3625A also performs continuous diagnostic checks. These checks help the control system identify certain internal, switching, and field-related abnormalities so that maintenance personnel can respond before a fault develops into a wider operational problem.

Why Is the Triconex 3625A Suitable for Safety-Critical Output Control?
Digital outputs in an ordinary control system mainly execute operating commands. In a safety instrumented system, however, an output may initiate an emergency shutdown or move equipment into a defined safe condition. Reliability and diagnostic coverage are therefore especially important.

The Triconex 3625A supports these requirements through several design characteristics:
Triple Modular Redundant output architecture
Supervised or non-supervised output capability
Continuous module and output diagnostics
Self-protected output switches
Compatibility with energize-to-trip and de-energize-to-trip strategies
Support for redundant field power arrangements
Individual output and module-status indication

Unlike the earlier 3625 configuration, the 3625A separates field power into two groups of 16 output points while maintaining a common return. The two groups are separated through the termination panels. This arrangement provides additional flexibility when planning field-power distribution.

According to the Tricon planning documentation, the 3625A can be used in applications previously served by the 3625, subject to complete system, firmware, termination, wiring, and engineering verification.

Where and When Should the Triconex 3625A Be Used?
The Triconex 3625A is intended for process installations where reliable output control is essential to plant safety or continuous operation. Typical industries may include:
Oil and gas production
Petroleum refining
Petrochemical processing
Chemical manufacturing
Power generation
Pipeline and compressor facilities
Offshore processing platforms
Other high-integrity process applications

Within these facilities, the module may control compatible 24 VDC field loads such as shutdown solenoids, interposing relays, trip circuits, alarms, and other discrete actuators.

The 3625A may be considered when a plant is expanding an existing compatible Tricon system, replacing a matching module, maintaining critical spare-parts availability, or upgrading a system configuration that originally used a 3625 module.

Manufacturer documentation states that the 3625 and 3625A modules can be installed only in Tricon version 10.2 or later systems. Low-density systems must also be upgraded to a supported version before compatibility can be assumed.

Because this equipment may form part of a safety function, module selection should never be based on the model number alone. The installed system version, chassis, termination panels, field voltage, load characteristics, safety requirements, and application logic must all be reviewed.

Which Technical Features Should Be Checked Before Installation?
Number of output signals:32
Nominal voltage :24 VDC
Recommended voltage range:16–32 VDC
Maximum voltage:36 VDC
Logic power:Less than 13 W
Maximum output current:1.70 A ±10% per point
Surge current:5 A for 7 ms
Total module output current:10 A per termination panel
Minimum required load for an OFF point:10 mA within 100 μs
Maximum output leakage:2.0 mA at 24 VDC; 2.5 mA at 32 VDC

The Triconex 3625A Digital Output Module provides 32 TMR output points for compatible Tricon safety and critical-control systems. Its supervised or non-supervised operation, diagnostic capabilities, protected output switching, and divided field-power arrangement make it suitable for demanding 24 VDC output applications.

Its effectiveness depends on correct engineering. System version, termination hardware, field-power design, connected loads, and safety requirements must all be verified before installation. When properly selected and maintained, the 3625A can support reliable control of essential field devices and contribute to the dependable operation of industrial safety systems.
