Case expansion is a crucial measurement in Turbine Supervisory Instrumentation (TSI), specifically used to monitor the thermal growth of the machine casing during startup and on-line operations. As the machine heats up, the casing expands, which is known as case expansion or shell expansion. This expansion occurs as the casing thermally grows relative to the foundation, and it is typically monitored using a case expansion transducer system.
The transducer system is mounted on the foundation opposite to where the turbine casing is attached, and it measures the growth of the casing relative to the foundation. To ensure accurate measurement, a dual transducer arrangement is often employed. This setup helps in measuring the position of the sliding feet on the machine casing. If one foot becomes obstructed or jammed, it could distort the case and potentially damage the machine. Using a dual transducer system, in combination with the 3300 or 3500 monitors, provides an alarm for such issues.
For high-temperature operations, a dual case expansion transducer configuration is compatible only with the 3500/45 Position Monitor. Additionally, case expansion measurements help monitor whether machine conditions are exceeding expected temperature growth differentials, particularly during startup. Ensuring that the casing and rotor grow thermally at nearly the same rate is critical, as mismatched thermal growth rates can cause rubbing between the rotating and stationary parts of the machine.
The case expansion transducer assembly consists of a Linear Variable Differential Transformer (LVDT), which is housed in a weatherproof, protective enclosure, ensuring durability and reliability even in harsh industrial environments.
